Thomas Jefferson was President of the United States from 1801-1809 but this story is set in 1807. At that time Great Britain and France lead by the ambitious Napoleon were at war and the US was in grave danger of being drawn in to the struggle. As a matter of fact it was this situation, which eventually lead to the war of 1812 although President Jefferson tried his best at this time to avoid this danger. He was a pioneer of economic pressure and the first of our presidents to so strongly attempt the use of peaceful means to prevent a war.
