Stories begin in many different ways for Randy Stone who covers the night beat for the Chicago Tribune but tonight it was too hot to cover anything. It was too hot for wife killings, gangland murders and such nonsense. Nobody had energy for much more than to wave a soggy newspaper back and forth in front of his face and a standard reply to the standard question, “what’s cooking?” was a dull “me!” Around 10 o’clock with no story in sight Stone checked in to the office and received a call to go to the insane’s asylum as a lot of police cars were gathered there.
