Phil Jacks rides in to Dodge and asks Matt Dillon to ride out on to the prairie with him to meet Dolph Quince who is the trail boss of some Texas Cow herders who are moving their cattle across Kansas. Dolph wants Matt to ride with them for a few days until they arrive in Dodge as they have encountered trouble from some Kansas Jayhawkers.
