The weather had been typically tropically stormy when a stranger walked on board and introduced himself as Van Ryper, master of the lugger Triani. He was anxious to unload some passengers onto The Scarlet Queen and he was prepared to pay handsomely for Carney to take them on board. Why all the mystery?
