Mr Cavanaugh has never been quite accepted as stepfather by Fred or Eunice Blair. His youth counted against him as they misinterpreted his motives as one would when any man marries a wealth widow twice his age. His troubles began several months ago when his wife died from the scandal when her son Fred struck up an acquaintance with a hoodlum named Johnny Verona and had to testify against him for a murder. It was all in the papers and Mr Cavanaugh’s wife dropped dead when the butler brought in the Chronicle but the worst was yet to come.
