Somewhere on the muddy road to Chancellorsville, a company of Union soldiers was moving up through the early morning mist into position opposite the Confederate forces. At the head of this ragged, mud-soaked column, a tall, erect young man whose military bearing set an example to the tiring troops behind him, marched along as though he were leading a parade through Boston Common.
