Rowena Raven has been receiving threatening letters at her home, Ravenswood. This has been going on for a few weeks now and since the police will do nothing about it she has called in for the help of Sam Spade. When he arrives he is shown around the spooky old premises by Ms Raven's nephew, Ralph Raven, a slight man with almost transparent chalk white skin, whom has been left bound to a wheelchair due to an unfortunate automobile accident.
