The first stage was racing along the trail. Happy Joe Monk, the shotgun messenger who had been given his nickname because of his gloomy outlook upon life, hung onto the box of the coach with difficulty. He did not suspect that the skillful driver beside him was the famous Lone Ranger, who had assumed the identify of Wild Bill Riley, a well-known stage driver.
