Shaw hadn’t an enemy in the world so he had no idea why anyone would want to shoot him in the back. All Shaw can tell the Marshall is that he heard the shooter say something about Stone. Marshall Matt Dillon thinks that Shaw had been shot by mistake and that the shooter had mistaken Shaw for him, as they were of similar build and Dillon once knew a man named Stone.
