Those were wonderful and exciting days and even now after so many years and knowing what trouble and hardship was to come Hornblower would still elect to live them again if he had the choice. Yet on the morning when the captains of the squadron sat in the admiral’s cabin discussing the forthcoming operation Hornblower was full of foreboding. Admiral Layton had censured him for leaving the squadron despite his success. Hornblower could not help but feel that Layton still suspected him of having being Lady Barbara’s lover before her marriage to him.
