The rain was over the city that night the driving cold rain of October. The wind out of the northeast took the rain, took it and shook it and somewhere that late October evening there was a kind of sad sound in the world as of wasted things, wasted life and wasted dreams. And a girl walked slowly out of the rain, up the steps and in to the old cathedral, and she knelt with the rain still on her, on her face and hair and suddenly she was weeping, and this is the saddest of all sad sounds. The stifled pain locked in the throat of a girl who weeps in an old cathedral…
