Tom Wilcox had been acquitted of murder of a singer named Keith Hanson and now contacted Nero Wolfe by telephone for an appointment. Before Archie could finish the telephone conversation he heard a shot in the background, Wilcox dropped the phone and Archie feared that they had just lost a client.
