Carl Skruger is a cold and calculating gambler who threatened Dr Harvey Smith that he would kill him if he found out he had operated again. Two years ago in San Francisco Dr Smith had told Skruger that his wife needed an immediate operation for appendicitis but Skruger had refused to let him operate until it was too late and had blamed Dr Smith for his wife’s death. Dr Smith was happy working in Selkirk but decided that he and his wife would leave town while Skruger was there.
