After the war between the states, after the victory for one union was won and emancipation proclaimed throughout the land there were the bold days of the reconstruction when the spirit of Abraham Lincoln marched on to attempt a free commonwealth of freed men in the old south. Among the freed men who rose out of the chaos and conflict of the era one became a United States senator and fought courageously to make emancipation a living reality. This is the story of Senator Blanche K. Bruce (1841 –1898).
