The mysterious change in tone of the bells from the carillon has had a deep affect on the personal lives of Hop and Tank, for by implication, Mr Miller, the caretaker of the Lakeville town hall, has blamed young Christopher Cross for the sudden discordant tone of the Lakeville bell, and the boys are certain the crotchety old man won't hesitate to spread his suspicions around town!
