It was Tuesday night and the first time Pat Novak ever saw Rubin Callaway and the last time too. He was in the water his head struggling near to the surface. Pat pulled his boat up alongside and hauled him aboard. He looked as if he had been shot and as he lay dying he asked Novak to get in touch with a girl named Alma Biggs at the Empire Club and to give her a key for a locker down at the bus station and to tell her it didn’t work out, it didn’t work out for him at all…
