Mary falls in love with Crown Prince Rudolph who is the future king of Austria and is married. Her mother is ashamed and tells her after a year that she is forbidden from seeing him again. The King too tells Rudolph that he must stop seeing Mary or he will send her somewhere that he will never see her again. The king tells him he must put honor before love for the sake of the country and allows him to meet his love at Mayerling for their last rendezvous.
