Fred Oakes was a friend of Hoppy and California’s who had been sent to Battery Rock penitentiary to be hanged for the murder of old Judge Malkiyor but the judge’s death had really been an accident. As soon as they had proved this to everyone’s satisfaction Hopalong Cassidy and California headed to Battery Rock with a signed release in their pocket.
