John Richards was about to spend $75,000 on diamond and wanted to be sure that what he was getting was the real thing so he invited Blackie to inspect it - after all Blackie knew everything about diamonds and could be trusted. Blackie was the only person as well as Myra and John Richards who knew John had the diamond so when John was shot at his door Blackie was Inspector Faraday's prime suspect.
