Mel Hornby had killed homesteader Jake Reeves when his temper got the better of him in an argument and when Marshall Matt Dillon went to ask him some questions about it Hornby took offence and tried to kill Matt and Hornby ended up dead. Mrs Hornby was a pretty mean woman and didn’t believe that Matt had killed Hornby in self-defence. She accused Matt of murder and vowed to hire him killed with her $1000 savings.
