Dr. Sheridan's car screeches to a stop before the gray stone steps of the wide porch. The doctor rushed up the door to the townhouse, clutching his medical bag. There was confusion inside; the servants rushing this way and that and relatives barking orders. All of the clearing a path to the stairs to permit the doctor to dash hurriedly up to the big master bedroom where Ellen Denton lay breathing heavily. Outside her room was the awesome state of suspense, worry, fear for Ellen's life, until, at last, Dr. Sheridan stepped out into the hall, nodded reassuringly to Ellen's brother-in-law.
