It is the 23rd April 1899. Holmes is in a philosophical mood as he watches the rain falling outside. A cab pulls up outside the front door and a giant of a man gets out. On entering he has a sorry tale to tell about how he has lost his young wife and his money and he wants to hire Holmes to get them back, but Holmes feels the case is too simple and hands it over to Watson.
