A gripping tale of how one man ended up on death row and how the word reprieve has two meanings. John Garfield plays the part of Steve, part of an armed gang who have just been involved in major robbery. Steve, Joe and Murf decide to get out of town when they find that one of the gang has grassed to the police. They ride the rails to Fresno, but before they arrive it becomes apparent that Joe is the grass. Murf shoots him, but Steve ends up taking the rap for murder. It looks as though he is going to go down, but just before the case goes to court an attractive young journalist decides to help him to prove his innocence.
