Sam Spade had had a busy night. It had been some time since he had attended a lecture but last night at eight o’clock he piled into the central municipal auditorium along with several hundred other people. The first speaker up was the most distinguished foreign correspondent Silas Manning and he began his oration with the question are we helping our enemies? His answer was yes and as he told of what he’d seen and of the two secret trips he’d made incognito to communist strongholds in Red China the lights went out and Manning was shot dead.
