The young woman is in Monte Carlo working as a paid companion to Mrs Van Hopper and while there she meets the wealthy Maxim de Winter whom she falls in love with. They are soon married and are very happy until they return to Manderley, his large country mansion in Cornwall. Max’s first wife Rebecca had drowned in a boating accident the year before but she still seems to have a strange hold on Max and more so on Mrs Danvers the austere housekeeper who did everything possible to cause trouble between Mr and Mrs De Winters.
