Working for a jealous foreign country Rodney Martin and Mary Demming hoped to block the research of American scientists in quest of a new chemical element by intercepting shipments of meteoric rock between California and Saint Louis. Martin and the girl had boarded the Butterfield Stage Coach in California as passengers. Gunmen appeared when the Stage was near Saint Louis, they killed the guard and driver and unloaded the shipment of rock which they took to a nearby cave. The Lone Ranger had been especially appointed by the government to assist a federal agent in protecting the precious cargo. He found Inspector Black in the cave where he uncovered the stolen goods. Martins men appeared and in the fight that followed the gunmen were defeated. The Lone Rangers victory however was far from complete. Rodney Martin and the girl escaped in the stage coach and Inspector Black was killed.
