The date is 1890 and the European settlement of Fort Salisbury is only two months old and the rains have set in. Day after day, the grey clouds pour water onto the sodden earth. Men living in grass shelters or under canvas eat and sleep in mud, their clothes constantly soaked, and fever attacking their weakened bodies.
