The duke is surprised that the countess from Russia is sure that she wants to put all her winnings on a single card and explains to her that in Paris it is very rare that anyone wins on three cards in succession. However, she places the 400.000 francs on her next card and wins, but not so the Duke who appears to collapse gasping for air.
