Shirley was married to Doug Hathaway but made a play on his brother writer Fergie Hathaway. Ferty knew she was a cheat and had only married his brother for his money. When Ferty refused her advances she told her husband that Ferty had tried to make love to her. Ferty was afraid that Shirley was trying to use him to get rid of Doug. Meantime publisher Jerry North is concerned that one chapter in Ferty Hathaway’s book hasn’t been researched and is the real thing and in it someone kills him.
