In 1943 the Maritime Commission named the Liberty ship in honor of the woman named Janet Lord Roper. Well unless you are of the sea chances are you've never heard of her. She was a wife and a mother of three children and became known as Mother Roper to many men who went to sea. Because no one seemed to care about the men who went to sea she set up a campaign in Portland Oregon in the early twentieth century. There she not only provided food and comfort for the sailing men but kept in contact with them throughout the world helping reunite over ten thousand missing men with their families.
