In the year 1880 the old Paris Opera stood like a giant torch in the heart of the city a thousand windows ablaze with light but there were shadows too, shadows that flitted high in the gallery over the great stage. Shadows that lingered in the sub cellars far beneath the street where the black sewers of Paris ran sluggishly in the dark. But we were not concerned with these things or so we thought at the time, we of the opera knew only the light of the dressing room, the bright gaiety of the stage. It all began the night we sang Martha; the house was crowded and enthusiastic. There were no shadows that night…
