The doll shop stood on a quiet Washington side street not too far from the sprawling Pentagon building. A woman and child waited outside the little girl; peering eagerly at the dolls inside and the woman glancing impatiently at her wristwatch as if expecting someone who was late for an appointment. There was nothing about the doll shop to warn them that they were waiting to keep an appointment with doom.
