Sanders thinks it is a perfect stroke of luck that he ran in to Nick Carter and Patsy that evening as William Lasher District Attorney told him earlier that someone was going to murder him and Sanders knows that he is the man with the strongest motive. Nick Carter could be his reliable person to prove that he couldn’t commit the murder. Nick Carter takes a $10,000 fee from Sanders, and then they call upon William Lasher to establish that he is still alive. However, when William Lasher is later discovered murdered by poison Carter accuses Sanders of the murder despite him being with him all night.
