Philip Marlowe receives a call from an old friend Lynn Russell. But she hasn’t rung for pleasure she wants to hire him. She’s at Eugene’s Beauty Parlor and need help to get out of there. It seems an old boyfriend of hers, Ward Earling, is waiting outside for her to leave and she’s sure he’s going to kill her. Earling had been involved in an accident but he says it was no accident.
