Emily is a great bally dancer and all her daughter wants to do is follow in her beautiful mother’s footsteps. However her mother wants her daughter to attend finishing school and wants something better for her daughter. However for Susan who loves to dance there is nothing better. Steve is writing a waltz for Emily but when Emily dances to it he wants to give her a chance and even believes that Emily and Susan should perform the dance together in a pas de deux, mother and daughter, the waltz in a minor key for Emily and light and warm for young Susan. Emily thinks that the solemn waltz in the minor key so different from the gay waltz for Susan is the way that Steve feels about her.
