Captain Vincent Kronin is on night duty, and on returning to the station he sees a well dressed, pretty young woman with a cab driver named Joe, who is owed $4.40. Elizabeth Sanderson has lost her wallet, and can't pay him, so he has brought her to the station. She was heading to the station. Captain Kronin intervenes, and suggests that she write Joe a check.
