It is 7:45 pm August 18th 1941. Nick Hubbard the West Texas farmer is seated at the dinner table with his wife Min but Hubbard is not eating, instead his attention is riveted on an advertisement in the newspaper before him. But his wife is quick to tell him that he can’t have the car he is looking at, as he has to give the Mexican family half the money he has made on the cotton from his farm. The Mexican is coming back to the house for his money tonight. Hubbard offers him $50 of the $400 he owes him but Jose Moralis asks for all his money. Hubbard fires his gun to get Jose Moralis off his farm and kills him.
