As the grey convertible raced along the storm darkened country road Vivian Sedgwick leaned forward at the wheel and peered through the rain pounding against the windshield, her arms ached with the strain of steady relentless driving, but not once did she slacken her speed even as the car skidded around the kerb and turned on to the main highway which ran parallel to the railway tracks her foot remained on the accelerator down as far as it would go. Nervously she glanced at the clock on the dashboard it was almost 3 o’clock, four hours since she left Evergreen Lodge in lake Arrowhead. Four long harrowing hours…
