The New York slums are a jungle from which few people ever escape, and which fewer still ever return voluntarily. But Doctor Charles Keegan is one who did return to stay, setting up office in a crumbling brownstone building to serve the slums in which he had grown up. That was twenty years before Mary Allegro returned to the jungle, but unlike Dr Charles Keegan, beautiful Mary Allegro hadn't returned voluntarily, nor did she plan to stay... But then she was hit by a car, and was fighting for her life in the hospital. Charles explains to her humble father that she needs a brain operation, and he intends to try and save her, until he gets another visitor to his surgery, who offers him a $25,000 donation, to ensure the operation is successful. Maybe their idea of 'successful' is a little different though...
