It is 1:37 am September 9th 1945 when John Meston a wealthy rancher is awakened by the sound of a speeding car screeching to a stop outside his house. His daughter Connie Meston comes running up the stairs screaming hysterically. She tells him that Bob is dead and that she is very frightened of a man with a bandana over his face on the old cattle road east of the ranch who had tried to hold them up as they were parked there. The sheriff is called in and he calls in Jace Pearson of the Texas Rangers to investigate the murder.
