Not For Sale

I've often thought that one of the loneliest jobs on earth, must be running a one-man antique shop. The kind of little squalid shop where you never see a shopper entering, or a purchaser leaving - but only the proprietor pecking around his wares, like a pigeon among stale breadcrumbs. I wonder how a proprietor feels when a potential customer does enter his shop? Does he feel eager to make a sale? Does he resent the interruption of his pecking? Or is he perhaps, a little frightened?
