For three hours straight now Johnny Hale had sat at his desk shuffling through the stories and articles piled in front of him blue-pencilling some for changes and others for rewrites. It was December 21st and he had a special Christmas edition to get out by Wednesday. He could hear the quartet practicing Christmas carols in the office across from his window and as he opened the window it seemed the music was everywhere filling the crisp air with magic and beauty and warmth.

Then the prison whistle rang and Johnny Hale prisoner number 56084 made his way back to his cell for prison lights out in fifteen minutes…
