Hot sun beat down on the sides of rock canyons, throwing shimmering heatwaves against three horses and their riders. One of the men was masked, another an Indian, and between the two rode a boy of fourteen. Suddenly, the masked man signaled aloft, and asked Tonto if he could hear anything. It was a horse, coming toward them, which was unusual because nobody ever used that trail anymore. To avoid any questions about the Lone Ranger's mask, the three of them went to hide in the brush, out of sight.
