George Valentine receives an anonymous letter and three one hundred dollar bills from a man who has committed three murders. The police have seen no connection between the victims but there is a connection, a theme to these deaths as definite and as perfect as a motif in the work of Wagner and he wants George Valentine to provide him with the appreciation of an intelligent man, an exhilarating knowledge that from now on he’d be an obstacle in his path.
