The opening scene depicts a brig approaching the English coast. The captain is startled when, on his way to his cabin, he comes face to face with two men who he was unaware were on board. He discovers that one of them is the French Ambassador to England and the other one, he is told, is the ambassadors hairdresser, Monsieur Beaucaire. What he does not know is that the hairdresser is in fact the King of France.
