A highly excited seventeen-year-old girl burst into Valentines office and tells him that she feels like she is living under a dark heavy cloud just before the storm breaks. She knows her mother isn’t mixed up in any of this as she’s wonderful. Valentine has just about convinced himself that all there is behind the storm cloud is the attempted suicide of a man who also likes to dramatize himself, the ageing matinee idol Henry Mayhew whose cynical wife is finally leaving him. Of course the girl mother could help to explain all this but now she’s been killed in an automobile accident. George Valentine knows there’s need for more meddling in this…
