Gordon MacRae stars as Dick, and Dorothy Kirsten as Ottillie. Dick and Ottillie are in love, but as a serving apprentice in her father's business, Dick is not considered to be a suitable match for Mr Van Zand's beautiful and wealthy daughter. The show opens with Dick and Ottillie singing In Our Little Home, Sweet Home, before planting a box beneath the roots of a tree with the memories of their love, before Dick leaves to find his fortune in Europe.
