Freelance Detective George Valentine gets his work by advertising in the newspapers. This ad ran “Personal notice – danger’s my stock-in-trade. If you’re coming up with the third time and need someone’s help then call on me – write full details”. And the details arrived – “Dear Mr. Valentine I know the exact time of your morning mail I’ve checked on that. You have a very short time to get to me and keep me from being murdered. Believe me I have very good reason to be terrified. I can’t think of anyone else to help me….”
