Emmett Egan was an ex army man looking for something new and he wanted the job as Marshall of Dodge. He offered Matt Dillon money to take over his position. Matt advised him to go back to Chicago where he’d be a lot safer but Egan was determined. Matt said if he wanted the job so bad he could have it but first he must sample it for a week.
