It is 1937 and the location is the Bartlett's huge ancestral home in New England. The estate is ruled by Lydia Bartlett, a cruel and cantankerous woman. Into this unhappy setting has come young Genevieve Garrison to act as secretary companion to Lydia Bartlett. Lydia has one child, the handsome young Barry, who on his return from a tour round Europe is instantly attracted to Genevieve Garrison. But is it an attraction that he will live to regret?
